AI-based digital health platform with privacy-centric design

MyUSE is an AI-based digital health startup. Development began following several years of research. I was hired to interpret the research, develop an MVP, and move the project into the commercialization phase.

Challenge

MyUSE faced the challenge of developing a privacy-compliant digital health platform that could scale to thousands of users while maintaining strict data protection standards and offering an accessible user experience.

Key Points

  • Creating a multi-tenant architecture that maintained data separation
  • Building a platform that met GDPR and healthcare privacy requirements
  • Designing an accessible interface that achieved perfect Lighthouse scores
  • Scaling to support 10,000+ users with efficient resource utilization

The Approach

Discovery Phase:
  • Worked with psychologists to understand research requirements
  • Mapped user journeys and privacy requirements
  • Defined technical architecture requirements
Planning & Strategy:
  • Developed privacy-by-design approach for all features
  • Created scalable multi-tenant architecture plan
  • Established accessibility standards and testing protocols

Achievements

📐 Architecture
  • Worked with a team of psychologists to interpret research and aid the development of a cross-platform web app
  • Implemented privacy by design approach
  • Architected a performant, cost-effective tech stack to meet short and long-term goals (AWS/Nuxt JS/VueJS, Laravel)
  • Scaled to 10,000 users & several tenants on AWS
🎨 Frontend Development
  • Developed the front-end with UX best practices and recent WCAG guidelines in mind
  • Liaised with UCC DSS services to ensure compliance
  • Achieved a 100% Google Lighthouse score
🏗️ Backend Development
  • Designed and implemented a multi-tenant backend architecture, considering scalability, performance, and long-term costs
  • Utilized Nginx, RDS, Aurora, Route53, EC2, S3
🛠️ Testing & Project Management
  • Provided tools to support development and synergize team output, such as an integrated CMS
  • Implemented automated testing and analytics (Docker, Selenium, PHPUnit, HotJar)
🔒 Privacy & Compliance
  • Adopted a privacy-by-design approach to development
  • Developed the privacy policy in line with UCC ethics and recent GDPR guidelines
  • Wrote and maintained the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA)

Lessons Learned

What Went Well:
  • Privacy-by-design approach prevented later compliance issues
  • Early focus on accessibility standards simplified later development
  • Multi-tenant architecture allowed flexible client onboarding
Key Takeaways:
  • Frontend accessibility requires early planning and continuous testing
  • Privacy compliance documentation is as important as technical implementation
  • Multi-tenant architectures require careful planning for data isolation
